Lion's mane: what the human studies show

What lion’s mane is, what human trials have found for memory and focus, and how long to give it.

Lion's mane mushrooms growing on moss in a forest

The short answer

Lion's mane is an edible mushroom with a long history as a food and in traditional practice in East Asia. Today it is studied for focus and memory. In placebo-controlled trials, people were faster on an attention task an hour after a single dose, and older adults scored better on a cognitive screening test after 12 weeks of daily use. New trials keep arriving. That is what our Frontier grade means: the newest human research, growing fast. Cellovi Lion's Mane gives you 1,000 mg of organic fruiting body and mycelium in two capsules a day.*

Our grade: Frontier. The newest human research, with the most encouraging results from steady daily use.*

What lion's mane is

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood trees. It is also eaten as a food, sometimes sliced and pan-fried like a steak. Researchers are interested in two families of compounds it contains:

  • Hericenones, found mainly in the fruiting body, the part you see and eat.
  • Erinacines, found mainly in the mycelium, the root-like network the mushroom grows from.

A 2026 lab analysis confirmed that split, and found that the amounts vary widely between commercial products (Tang et al., 2026). Cellovi Lion's Mane combines both parts, standardized to 40% polysaccharides, the mushroom's natural carbohydrates, so every serving is consistent.

What human studies found

Study Who, dose and length What the study found
Saitsu et al., 2019 31 healthy adults, average age about 61; 3.2 g of fruiting body a day, 12 weeks Better scores than placebo on a short cognitive screening test at 12 weeks
Docherty et al., 2023 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45; 1.8 g a day, 28 days Faster than placebo on an attention task after a single dose
La Monica et al., 2023 40 healthy adults; single 1 g dose Reaction time was quicker 2 hours after the dose than before it. The dose was the same amount as our daily serving
Daoust et al., 2026 109 adults aged 40 to 75 who wanted better focus and memory; 2 g of fruiting body and mycelium a day, 8 weeks Better visual attention and working memory than placebo, with better sleep quality and mood

A few other studies looked at people with diagnosed health conditions. We don't use those to support our claims, because our products are for healthy adults.

Our reading: the most encouraging results come from daily use over 8 to 12 weeks in older adults, which makes it a natural daily addition to a focus routine.*

How to take it

  • 2 capsules a day, at the same time each day. Studies gave it both with and without food, so choose what's easiest to remember; breakfast works well.
  • Give it 8 to 12 weeks of daily use before you judge it. In the 2019 study, the difference showed up by week 12.
  • Our 1,000 mg is the same amount used in a 2023 single-dose study, where reaction time was quicker 2 hours later than before the dose. Longer daily studies used 1.8 to 3.2 g.*

Who should check with a doctor first

  • Anyone allergic to mushrooms: avoid it. Rare allergic reactions have been reported (NIH LiverTox).
  • People taking blood thinners or diabetes medicines: lab and animal studies suggest possible effects on clotting and blood sugar, so check with your clinician.
  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding: there are no safety data.

Lion's mane is generally well tolerated. NIH LiverTox rates it unlikely to cause liver injury; the side effects reported in trials were mild stomach discomfort or nausea in a small share of people.

Where it fits in your day

Cellovi Lion's Mane is organic, in vegan capsules, for $1.17 a day. It is part of the Sharp Mind Protocol, with Creatine and Omega-3. The three were chosen to support focus in complementary ways.*

Common questions

How long does lion's mane take to work?

In a placebo-controlled study, people were faster on an attention task an hour after a single dose. The most encouraging results come from daily use over 8 to 12 weeks, so give it that long before you judge it.*

Fruiting body or mycelium?

Each has its own compounds: hericenones mainly in the fruiting body, erinacines mainly in the mycelium. Cellovi Lion's Mane combines both, standardized to 40% polysaccharides.

Is lion's mane safe?

It is generally well tolerated, and NIH LiverTox rates it unlikely to cause liver injury. Avoid it if you are allergic to mushrooms, and check with your clinician if you take blood thinners or diabetes medicines.

Should I take lion's mane with food?

Either works. Studies gave it both with and without food, so choose what is easiest to remember; breakfast works well.
